Benazir Bhutto’s political timeline
- Benazir Bhutto was born on June 21, 1953, at Pinto’s Nursing Home in Karachi, Pakistan, as the first child of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Begum Nusrat Ispahani. Nusrat, who was from Iran, practiced Shi’a Islam, while her husband practiced Sunni Islam. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto served as the fourth President of Pakistan from 1971 to 1973 and later as the ninth Prime Minister from 1973 to 1977. The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) was founded by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in Lahore on November 30, 1967, at the residence of prominent progressive leader Khurshid Hassan Mir. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was arrested on September 3, 1977, on charges related to the murder of Nawab Muhammad Ahmed Khan Kasuri, and he was hanged in Rawalpindi’s Central Jail on April 4, 1979.
- Benazir Bhutto graduated from Harvard University (USA) with a degree in comparative government in 1973. Three years later, in 1976, she was elected president of the Oxford Union at Oxford University (UK), becoming the first Asian woman to head the debating society.
- In 1978, Benazir Bhutto published her first book, “Foreign Policy in Perspective”.
- Benazir Bhutto returned to Pakistan in 1986 to lead the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), which her father had founded in 1967.
- Two years later, in November 1988, she led her party to victory in nationwide elections. Benazir Bhutto took the oath to become Pakistan’s first female prime minister on December 2, 1988.
- In 1989, Benazir Bhutto published her second book, “Daughter of Destiny” or Daughter of the East”. It was her first autobiography.
- Her government was dismissed on August 6, 1990, by President Ghulam Ishaq Khan, a close aid of the deceased military ruler General Ziaul Haq, on charges of corruption. Her husband, Asif Zardari, was arrested on kidnap charges. Despite these setbacks, Benazir Bhutto went on to become the leader of the opposition, while Nawaz Sharif took over as prime minister on November 1, 1990.
- In 1993, Benazir Bhutto led the opposition to an election victory. On October 19, 1993, Benazir Bhutto was sworn in for the second time as the 13th prime minister of the country. She began to cement ties with the military, which had been instrumental in her 1990 ouster.
- President Farooq Leghari dismissed her government on corruption charges on November 5, 1996 using the Eighth Amendment and installed Malik Meraj Khalid as caretaker prime minister.
- Benazir Bhutto wrote “Reconciliation: Islam, Democracy, and the West” following her return to Pakistan in October 2007, after eight years of self-imposed exile in Dubai, UAE. This poignant work was completed just a couple of months before her tragic assassination in December 2007.
The Eighth Amendment or Article 58 2(B) was a constitutional amendment which aimed at strengthening the authority of the president to dismiss the elected prime minister and dissolve the National Assembly and provincial assemblies “… if in his / her opinion, a situation has arisen in which the government of the federation cannot be carried on [out] in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and an appeal to the electorate is necessary.”
