Bright spots on the sun
Holes occurring in heavenly bodies
Collapsing objects of high density
Collapsing objects of low density
- Black holes are the regions of spacetime where gravity is so strong that nothing, including light and other electromagnetic waves, has enough energy to escape. The boundary of no escape is called the event horizon. Black holes are extremely massive, but that mass is concentrated in a smaller area, creating a high density that increases the maximum force of a black hole’s gravity by allowing objects to get very close to all of that mass.
- Formation: A black hole forms when a massive star (at least three times the mass of our Sun), exhausts its fuel, explodes in a supernova, and collapses under gravity into an incredibly dense core called a singularity.
- Types of Black Holes:
- Stellar Black Holes: Formed by the collapse of a single massive star at the end of its life cycle. Mass typically ranges between 3 to 100 times mass of the Sun.
- Intermediate Black Holes: Formed through merger of stellar black holes or collapse of massive star clusters. Mass between 100 and 1,00,000 times that of the Sun.
- Supermassive Black Holes: Found at the centres of most galaxies, including our Milky Way. Their origin is not exactly understood, but may involve accretion of matter, merger or collapse of massive gas clouds. Masses range from millions to billions of times the sun’s mass.
