The term ‘optical fiber communication’ refers to a communication technique in which a signal is transmitted as light, with optical fiber serving as the medium for moving those light signals from one location to another. A signal transmitted through an optical fiber is transformed from an electrical signal into light, which is then converted back into an electrical signal at the receiving end. Optical fiber communication has been applied for a variety of telecommunication needs because it performs well in long-distance and high-speed data transfer.
- The transmitter is a device or circuit that prepares the signal for long-distance transmission. If the communication system is large, a transmitter can be a large or complex circuit. A transmitter performs a variety of critical functions. It modulates the signal with the help of a carrier signal. It boosts the signal’s strength to allow for long-distance communication. It is necessary to convert the signal. For example, if the signal is to be transmitted via electrical conductors or lines, no conversion is required; simply amplification is sufficient. However, if the signal is to be sent through space, the transmitter will convert the electrical signals into radio waves. If the signal is to be sent via fibre optic cable, the transmitter will convert the electrical signal into light or optical signal.
- An Optical Fibre is a thin, transparent fibre made of glass or plastic that is used to transmit data as light signals. It works on the principle of Total Internal Reflection, where the light signal is confined within the core of the fibre and is guided through the fibre with minimal loss of signal. Optical fibres are used in telecommunications, computer networks, and other applications where high-speed data transmission is required.
- A Decoder is an electronic device or software that is used to convert encoded data into its original form. In the context of television signals, a decoder is used to convert the encoded signal into a format that can be displayed on a television screen. Decoders can be used to decode various types of encoded data, including digital television signals, audio signals, and data streams. Examples of decoders include set-top boxes, digital video disc (DVD) players, and software decoders used in computer applications.
- A Photodiode is a type of semiconductor device that is used to convert light into an electrical signal. It consists of a p-n junction that is sensitive to light, and when light is incident on the junction, it generates an electrical current. Photo diodes are used in a wide range of applications, including optical communication systems, light detection and ranging (LIDAR) systems, and optical sensors. In the context of optical communication systems, photo diodes are used to convert the received optical signal back into an electrical signal, which can then be processed and decoded into the original data.
